Blossom Dearie is the real name of this jazz vocalist & pianist, born 28 April 1926 in East Durham, New York. Ms. Dearie died February 7, 2009.
An extremely girly voice can sometimes mask her ability to swing and her ability to choose exceptional songs. Her arrangements are also recognizeable for leaving lots of space for the singer, which is a rare thing. She didn’t take her self too seriously and had the ability to be quite moving with her more melancholic material. She is comparable to Chet Baker.
She started her own label, Daffodil Records, in 1974.
As recently as 2006, the 80 year old Dearie was still performing at Danny’s Skylight Room in New York City.
