Bryne, Rogaland, Norway (1991 – 1996)

Blod, snått & juling (Blood, Snot & Beating) was a Norwegian group. The band consisted of Janove Ottesen and Geir Zahl, childhood friends born and raised in Bryne, Rogaland, Norway. This was the duo’s first project whose material is known to have been recorded; they would often pitch new song ideas to each other in the form of acoustic demos recorded on 8-track tapes. The style of their compositions varied intensely, from gentle, acoustic folk to heavily distorted .

Blod, snått & juling was formed in 1991. During their active period, they recorded and released two official tapes: Ein glad tunnel (1994), and Sympatiske fisk (1995), released in print runs of 50 and 100, respectively. The band gained a small fan following consisting of friends from school, relatives and family, as well as some locals. A common collaborator of the group was Terje Vinterstø, who would later become a member of Kaizers Orchestra, Ottesen and Zahl’s most successful project.

In 1996, the band faced creative difficulties while working on their third tape release, which was left unfinished and unreleased, and Blod, snått & juling dissolved as the two went separate ways. Shortly thereafter, Ottesen and Zahl formed a new group, gnom. A number of Blod, snått & juling songs were re-recorded under the gnom name. In 2000, Ottesen and Zahl, as an acoustic duo, performed separate sets of Blod, snått & juling, gnom and newly-written Kaizers Orchestra material at Det beste stedet, a small venue in Sandnes, Norway; featured in the sets was Blod, snått & juling material that had never been released.
