Song For Clay (Disappear Here) (4:49)

Cover of A Weekend In The City

From A Weekend In The City and 1 other release

“Song for Clay (Disappear Here)” is the opening track from Bloc Party’s second album A Weekend in the City and was set to be the fourth single released from the album. A portion of the song was used in an advertisement for The O.C. on UK channel E4. The song was also used in the teaser trailer for Ben 10: Race Against Time.

The song is inspired by Bret Easton Ellis’ novel Less Than Zero whose main character’s name is Clay. Lyrics in the song include “People are afraid to merge on the freeways” which is a recurring line in the book, and is similar to the opening sentence in the novel. “Disappear Here” is seen on a billboard in the novel, and appears recurrently throughout. Other lyrics, such as “I live the dream” and “When we kiss, I feel nothing” coincide with common topics in the book.

The song was replaced as the fourth single in favour of the band’s newly recorded song Flux.

I am trying to be heroic
In an age of modernity
I am trying to be heroic
As all around me history sinks

People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles. This is the first thing I hear when I come back to city. Blair picks me up from LAX and mutters this under her breath as her car drives up the onramp. She says, 'People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles.' Though that sentence shouldn't bother me, it stays in my mind for an uncomfortably long time.

I'm afraid to merge on the freeway. I keep saying I'm going to read Less Than Zero but never get around to it. Love the song, think it's my favorite by them.

I read the novel after I fell in love with this song and it was fucking disturbing. But it made me love the song even more and made me discover a great writer.
