Siegerland (1979 – present)

pro musica sacra is a brass ensemble of mostly amateurs living in the Siegerland, a region in the south of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1979 seven church musicians got together on a Zaire/Africa tour and launched the ensemble. Soon they realized its ideas and grow to a strength of ten players like the Philip Jones Ensemble, which is the archetype of this instrumentation.

Since their formation pro musica sacra dedicate to sacred music and cultivate a close collaboration with church choirs and organists. Also they improve their stylistic variety at every opportunity. As an ensemble they play transparent chamber music but at the same time with symphonic magnificence and dynamics that only brass instrumentalists can produce. pro musica sacra plays compositions originally written for brass ensemble and of course many arrangements of classical works as well as adaptions of popular music like movie soundtracks. But outstanding for a nonprofessional ensemble is a quite presentable bunch of pieces arranged and composed especially for pro musica sacra. Its member André Becker arranged e.g. Le Carnaval des Animaux by Camille Saint-Saëns and score excerpts from Tarzan, Out of Africa and Once Upon a Time in the West. Becker, alumnus member and hornist Albert Prins and even internationally known Italian composer Dimitri Nicolau (*1946) also have written new compositions for brass ensemble dedicated to pro musica sacra.
