Version 23

Blake Lewis (aka Bshorty), runner-up on the sixth season of American Idol, is a singer/songwriter/beatboxer signed to Arista Records. His first album will be released in late 2007.

Lewis was born in Redmond, WA on July 21, 1981 and started singing around the age of 5. In junior high, he began singing in the Columbia Boys Choir and toured Europe with them. He also participated in choir at Kenmore Junior High and Inglemoor High School. In addition, he was in several plays and musicals in high school.

During his senior year of high school he was turned onto beat boxing and has been hooked ever since, winning several local beat boxing competitions. Lewis says he’s been “making noise [his] whole life.”

After high school, Lewis began performing all around the Pacific Northwest, looping his own beats and singing over them while playing guitar. (see here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LA8vtJxjneM) He also plays keyboard and drums.

Lewis was often complimented on American Idol for his creativity and canny song selections. Songs he performed on the show include: “Crazy” (Seal), “Somewhere Only We Know” (Keane), “Virtual Insanity” (Jamiroquai). “All Mixed Up” (311), “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” (Diana Ross), “Time of the Season” (The Zombies), “Love Song” (The Cure), “Mack the Knife” (Tony Bennett), “I Need to Know” (Marc Anthony), “When The Stars Go Blue” (Ryan Adams), “Imagine” (John Lennon), “You Give Love A Bad Name” (Bon Jovi), “You Should Be Dancing” (The Bee Gees), “This Is Where I Came In” (The Bee Gees), “Roxanne” (The Police), “This Love” (Maroon 5), “When I Get You Alone” (Robin Thicke), “She Will Be Loved” (Maroon 5) and “The Show” (with Doug E Fresh).

On June 21, 2007, Lewis wrote in his MySpace blog that on top of the American Idol tour, he has “been in meetings with producers and writers” for his album, though his record deal had not been announced officially at that time. In two interviews on June 25 and June 27, 2007, Lewis admitted that he had been recording his album in the studio “for all night long” since June 18.

As of July 14, he had already recorded six songs. Lewis described some of the songs he has recorded on July 16, 2007: “I try not to be put in a box. I’m inspired by everything. I’ve got six tracks done. I’ve got a track that’s very Erasure-sounding, a track that’s Sting-meets-Neverending Story and a track that’s very electro-poppy Depeche Mode. It’s all over the map.”

He expects to release a full length record by Thanksgiving to Christmas in 2007. Known collaborators/producers on his album include [Lewis’s best friend and fellow Idol finalist] Chris Richardson, BT, S*A*M (aka Sam Hollander) & Sluggo, J.R. Rotem, Steph Jones, Mike Elizondo and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.
