Biography

Black Slate represented the British reggae sound in the ’70s and early ’80s, much like Steel Pulse. They formed in 1974 in London, with members hailing from multiple countries. Keyboardist George Brightly and bassist Elroy Bailey were originally from London. Vocalist Keith Drummond, guitarist Chris Hanson, and drummer Desmond Mahoney came from Jamaica, and rhythm guitarist Cledwyn Rogers hailed from Anguilla. The group received their earliest work backing touring Jamaican acts, such as Delroy Wilson & Ken Boothe. In 1976, they hit the U.K. reggae charts with Sticks Man and landed a pair of hits in 1980, “Boom Boom” and “Amigo.” An album, Sirens In The City, followed on Ensign the following year. The band released two further albums in 1982 and 1985. After a 10-year hiatus they return in 2013 with a brand new EP World Citizenship - due to be released on June 15th 2013 via Unit 8 Records. With a UK & European Tour to follow!
