The name of this album is Verdun, but the singe track has separate names for the three distinct sections in it, which are not listed here on Last.fm. The first section is called "Prayer Sodden Holes". The middle section is "Tears Strike the Mile High Gong". The final section is called "Creeping Barrage".
The city of Verdun witnessed some of the most intense fighting of the 1st World War. The Germans launched a major offensive with the initial intention of "bleeding France white". The plan was not so much to take the city, but rather to drain France of its will to fight by inflicting as much damage as possible, depleting resources and morale. But, not all of the commanders understood this intention and many tried to hold the territory gained. The fighting dragged on for months and depleted both sides. Dysentery was common and the fighting was too severe to remove corpses much of the time. From unending artillery barrages, low morale, rotting comrades, unable to move from a hole or ditch while waiting, the soldiers were miserable. In the end, neither side gained anything or recovered from what strength they had lost in this battle. This track is like a contemplation of the emotional states of being there, the anguished horror, sense of hopelessness, the sheer brutal monotony of it all.
