The Netherlands (1992 – present)

BLØF was officially founded in 1992, in the province of Zeeland, The Netherlands. The original lineup was composed of the members Peter Slager, Paskal Jakobsen, BAS KENNIS and Henk Tjoonk. Over the course of six years, the group had released nine records with multiple hit songs, and performed many sold-out performances. Their song Aan De Kust (At the coast) from their debut album Naakt onder de hemel (Naked under the sky) is considered to be the new anthem of the province Zeeland, because the song is about this province.

Rather than singing in English, as is common practice among Dutch bands, BLØF produces songs in their native Dutch, vastly contributing to the popularization of , as the genre has been known in the Netherlands…

Besides having deeply sensitive lyrics, BLØF incorporates sounds from around the world. Their hit song Aanzoek zonder ringen (Proposal without rings) uses Japanese kodo drums in the background, while their album, UMOJA, was the result of a journey around the world to capture multi-national sounds.

Critics claim that their formula for success is the way they crafted songs; they try to find the ideal balance between alternative and , poetic lyrics, and the voice of Paskal Jakobsen. This has brought BLØF the hits, awards, airplay, and (inter-)national recognition that has propelled these four musicians into the most successful Dutch-language group in recent years.

    @ktmf: De echte vraag is eigenlijk dus of Bløf van naam veranderd is. Voor zover ik het weet was het eerst in 100% van de gevallen Bløf en het lijkt nu voornamelijk BLØF te zijn (geïnspireerd op het logo?). Maar wanneer de naam nou echt veranderd is is niet te zeggen, omdat het een geleidelijke overgang is waarbij BLØF steeds vaker voorkomt, maar Bløf nog steeds niet verdwenen is. Die overgang is niet iets van de laatste jaren, daar zaten ze in 2001 al in. In de aankondiging van Oog in Oog in 2001 stond er op hun website juist in de tekst Bløf en als copyright onderaan BLØF (Na te gaan via http://web.archive.org/web/20010602185240/http://www.blof.nl/ ) Laten we het maar samenvatten met: Zowel Bløf als BLØF zijn correcte spellingswijzen om te refereren naar deze band. Bij het verwijzen naar het eerste album is Bløf de enige correcte, voor de latere albums kan het allebei. Dus om mijn library opgeruimd te houden en niet 2 bands te hebben gebruik ik Bløf.

    @dsirtsdew: tegenover die verwijzing op het eerste album en de webmaster die het op de website verkeerd doet staat wel de verwijzing bij AgentsAfterAll naar BLØF en de officiele videoclip op YouTube (waar de kanaaltitel dan weer niet klopt) Zie www.youtube.com/user/blofarchief en http://www.youtube.com/user/bloftv en overtuig jezelf.

    @Podex, ktmf etc.: Nee, zo staat het niet op AL hun albums. Check hun eerste album, Naakt onder de hemel maar, het enige album waar het in tekst op staat. Verder hebben ze altijd een logo gebruikt... Ook op hun website staat linksonder op alle pagina's (c) Bløf dus NIET met hoofdletters. Oftewel, Bløf is zeker geen foute spelling. Vanaf hun tweede album hanteren ze het 4 hoofdletter-logo, maar dat is dan ook met vierkantjes eromheen. En tegenwoordig hebben ze het versimpelt tot een paar lijntjes, wat ik overigens geen goede ontwikkeling vind. Je moet weten wat er staat om het te kunnen lezen. Er zou net zo goed ELØF, EUØF, BUØF etc. kunnen staan. Ik vind het persoonlijk het meest op ELØF lijken. Wat mij betreft houden we Bløf aan als spelling van hun naam. Dat was het en dat de hoofdletter-variant de laatste tijd aan populariteit wint kan me niks schelen.
