Birgit Muggenthaler (born January 2, 1974 in Munich ) is a German folk musician. She is a certified classical ensemble director, graduate landscape architect and qualified Feng Shui consultant. Muggenthaler received a classical education in flute, piano, bass and vocals. She has been involved with workshops in whistle, bagpipes, shawm and hurdy-gurdy. Birgit also spent 2 years training in the “Music of the Middle Ages - Early Music of The Upper Classes” with Marc Levon and Uri Smilansky. In addition to her music projects she teaches flute and bagpipes. Together with Ulrike Fritsch they organized “game courses” for bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy and accordion in Agatharied in Upper Bavaria.

Beginning in 1997 Birgit appeared with the French dance music band Flange. In the summer of 1998 she was a founding member of Schandmaul, a German medieval folk rock band. With Schandmaul Muggenthaler has recorded 7 studio albums between 1999 - 2011. The band also has 3 live albums. In 2002 she formed the medieval pagan folk band Faun with Oliver “SaTyr” Pade, Elisabeth Pawelke and Fiona Rüggeberg but left in 2004 to concentrate on Schandmaul. In 2004 Birgit also formed Sava with Oliver Pade. As of 2008 they have released 2 albums.

Birgit Muggenthaler(-Schmack) is married with one son and lives in Regensburg,Germany .
