Biography
Birdengine is the musical project of Lawry Joseph Tilbury, whose unique music has been described by The Independent as ‘beautiful, backwards weirdness’ and by WARP Records as “an unknown supernatural force”.
Having released two EP’s of early experimental work on Scottish label Benbecula Records in 2005, described by Stylus Magazine as, ‘The first relevant work of freak folktronica’, he then went on to produce the mini-album ‘I Fed Thee Rabbit Water’ (released on Drift Records in 2007) described by The Independent as ‘a 25 minute pastoral masterpiece’. The release of ‘The Crooked Mile’ saw Birdengine record his first full length album, UNCUT said “it whirls like a waltz for the dead - the results are unmistakable and unsettling”
Lyrically, Tilbury’s imagery engages with the idea of not quite belonging to society and the senses of alienation that accompany feeling as though you are an outsider.
Live, Birdengine accompanies his unique voice with purposefully plucked nylon guitar, record crackle and noise. Sometimes playing solo and other times with collaborators. Birdengine has been privileged to play all over Europe alongside many incredible artists, including Josephine Foster, Herman Dune, Danielson and Shearwater. He has also played the magnificent Green Man Festival, as well as End Of The Road and Glastonbury.
“sort of creepy lo-fi, folky weirdness”
UNCUT
“…an unknown supernatural force…”
WARP
“Both unnerving and intriguing in equal measures.”
Maverick Magazine
“nervy pastoral loneliness”
Word Magazine
“…magically creepy and sparsely epic, capturing the imagination…”
