Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) (3:29)

“Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” is a song written and recorded by Billy Joel. The track details the singer’s disgust with the upwardly-mobile bourgeois aspirations of working and lower-middle class New Yorkers who take pride at working long hours in order to afford the outward signs of having “made it”. Joel considers their rejection of their working-class roots (trading a Chevy for a Cadillac and buying a house in Hackensack, New Jersey) to be ultimately futile; in the end, the rewards are a “heart attack” or “a broken back”. The car heard being driven in the song was the bass player’s (Doug Stegmeyer) 1960s Corvette. According to Joel, Anthony isn’t a real person, but rather “every Irish, Polish, and Italian kid trying to make a living in the U.S.”. The song originally appeared on Joel’s 1977 album, The Stranger.

Rhythmic and soothing, nice instrumental portions and clean vocals.

His songs from the 70s are so evocative. The Neil Sedaka Laughter in the Rain similarity had never occurred to me til now, but yes it does!

Joel first wrote this song to a soft ballad mystery tune he had in his head. When he performed it for his band in the studio, they informed him WHERE he got the tune - it was identical to Neil Sadaka's "Laughter In The Rain." Embarrassed, Joel changed it to a more rocking tune. http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4687

This is the opening song to "The Stranger" ; it is not on "Piano Man" as credited. Both are great albums, but "the Stranger" is a little stronger in it's entirety - despite the wonderful "Captain Jack" and "Ballad of Billy the Kid" on Piano Man. Billy - you're still breathing, so get to work cranking out a few more gems ;)-
