    Mermaid Avenue is amazing. I've come to this conclusion after listening to it for a month. Everything about it is fantastic, from Woody Guthrie's lyrics, to Billy Bragg's vocals, to Wilco's music. It all works so well, and it comes out as one of the most perfectly complete albums I've ever heard. I wanted to talk about this, because I just watched The Man in the Sand, a documentary DVD on the making of Mermaid Avenue, and I was really excited about it. The first half focuses mainly on Bragg following Guthrie's life across the states, looking to capture the spirit that was behind the writing. This area is great, it shows a really interesting time in America, and the fascinating life of a true poet. The second half focuses more on the production of the album, with lots of conversation between Bragg and Wilco as they discuss everything from song choice to the album title. The music is still the best part of the whole deal, and there are a lot of live performances scattered throughout the DVD. …
