London, United Kingdom (1989 – present)

Billie Ray Martin (b. Birgit Dieckmann in Hamburg, DE), is a London, UK, singer-songwriter / DJ who made her recording début as guest vocalist on S’Express’ hit Sly Stone-cover Hey Music Lover (1989, Rhythm King).

Billie was further involved with S’Express, vocals on two more tracks for their début album, “Original Soundtrack” (1989, Rhythm King), “L’Age Du Gateau” and “Pimps, Pushers, Prostitutes”. However, Billie came to greater prominence leading the act Electribe 101.

Electribe 101 scored a series of hits, including Talking With Myself, before Billie moved on to continue exploring fusions of electronic music and soul. After releasing the thoroughly scary Throbbing Gristle cover Persuasion (Aug 1993, Guerilla - with Spooky) and “4 Ambient Tales” (Nov 1993, Apollo - with The Grid), Billie found herself with an international number one hit, Your Loving Arms (Oct 1994, Magnet). Three more hits and an album followed, “Deadline For My Memories” (Oct 1995, Magnet).

Since then Billie has worked with Ann Peebles and Carla Thomas, as well as Al Green’s and Aretha Franklin’s musicians on her album “18 Carat Garbage” (Mar 2001, Sonnenstahl), developing her dream of ‘Memphis meets ’.

Billie once described herself as “a kid from the red light district of Hamburg who wanted to be a soul singer and found herself making repetitive electronic music, while still trying to be soul singer”.

Love her music. I fell in love with her voice after I heard the Todd Terry remix of "Your Loving Arms" on one of those K-Tel Club Mix CDs they used to sell late at night on TV infomercials. I have liked most of what she did since then. While I do l enjoy her original versions and album tracks, the remixes of her songs are what I prefer. I thought her and Junior Vasquez as well as Brothers In Rhythm were a perfect fit. With a voice like that, she could sing the phonebook and it would still sound amazing.
