    I only just realized that How the Thing Sings is supposed to play at 45 rpm after I went to transfer it to digital, and all the track lengths were way off. I can say it made the vocals more interesting at 33 rpm, but the album does make a little more sense at the correct speed. Edit: In my defense, it doesn't seem to specify the speed anywhere on the gatefold sleeve or the record.

    New way to pay old debts contains some good riffs, but relies too much on using the drone effect of sixth or fifth strings and constructing riffs on that basis even though the drone is only after the riff or section. Nice variation though. I agree that this doesn't sound like Bailey at all-this is much more repetitious and theme-oriented than some of Baileys stuff I've heard.

    much as I love his stuff - he sounds NOTHING like Derek Bailey - it's a lazy comparison which does neither of them any favours. Bailey's playing is about a zillion times more nuanced than Orcutt's, and for the most part, is completely outside the blues idiom. This is no-wave with a barbed-wire enema up the delta...
