"dirty ole' Bill" hahahahahahahahaha that made me laugh so hard. Well said. ...and I think that anyone missing the inherent tongue-so-deeply-in-cheek-false-sincerity that dirty ol' Bill has been mining for years and years in this song should consider listening to some of his other stuff and come back. I promise you'll find it enlightening, as I could listen to this song and repeat and never get tired of it, nor stop laughing at the same jokes over and over again. Maybe I'm a simpleton.

I kind of assumed this song was about weighing up the good aspects and bad aspects of America and choosing to love it anyway. Bill realises that there’s a middle ground between Toby Keith’s blind patriotism and Rage Against The Machine’s blinkered pessimism.

http://motherjones.com/mixed-media/2011/06/bill-callahan-apocalypse-interview For ShootTheCore. That's the first one I came across, although I've read him say much along the same lines in countless others too.

Robbie Williams - Rock DJ anyone? I hope it's just me. I suspect that if the 2 are played simultaneously the world may end. Maybe *That* is Bill's apocalypse..

@nigeyb, KILLER good call on the Scott-Heron influence. really exciting to see that it goes both ways. also, I can't help but smile knowing how dirty ol' Bill must have had an eyebrow or two raised as he sang "deep in America! tonight"...

these lyrics are shouting out loud! i don't think anyone could misinterpret them, even politicians who have that big wall of ignorance would get some kind of itchy feeling of not getting it.... at the least
