Between the Buried and Me is a progressive metal quintet from Raleigh, North Carolina that infuses a wide array of genres into their music, including both soft rock and jazz. This is evident in their choice of name, which is derived from a section of lyrics from the Counting Crows’ song 
Ghost Train, which proceeds as follows: “Took the cannonball down to the ocean, Across the desert from the sea to shining sea, I rode a ladder that climbed across the nation, Fifty million feet of earth between the buried and me.”
The band was founded in early 2000 by vocalist Tommy Giles Rogers, Jr. and guitarist Paul Waggoner, whose prior project was metalcore/straight edge band Prayer for Cleansing. Since that time, the band has undergone many lineup changes. Currently, the band contains two members from fellow North Carolina band Glass Casket, Dustie Waring on guitar and Blake Richardson on drums. This has caused some question as to the future of Glass Casket, although both deny claims that Glass Casket will break up anytime soon, as the band’s other members are currently busy with college and jobs.
They are avid animal rights enthusiasts; three are vegan and one is a vegetarian.
They have released five full length albums to date:
Between The Buried And Me (2002)
The Silent Circus (2003)
Alaska (2005)
Colors (2007)
The Great Misdirect (2009)
They also released a tribute album, “The Anatomy Of…” in 2006, which pays homage to a number of bands that have influenced them.
An instrumental version of Alaska also exists, containing 8 of the 11 tracks from the original version, unmentioned on their official web site.

I hate when people use the term "pretentious" to differentiate between music that is created with mediocre effort and/or zero creativity and music that is created with intent, direction, and god forbid, a bit of talent. I listen to my fair share of straight-out-the-gutter brutal death metal, as well as plenty of other genres (trying to keep this point as minimally "elite" as I can). My point being, there's obviously a time and place for certain styles and ability, etc. To just call every bit of Prog/Tech. Death pretentious and wankery is like calling every Thrash band "fast". Music goes much further beyond the basics of what you here immediately in the atmosphere and instruments. You have no credibility in my eyes as a music lover if you can't look past the face-value of a band/album/song. That's about all I have to throw out there. I love these guys. I love indie, electronica, reggae, dubstep, deathcore, vaudeville, brit rock, etc. Final point=be open try new things. Listen to Colors
