Herbert Jansch (b. 3rd November 1943), commonly known as Bert Jansch, is a Scottish folk musician and founding member of the band The Pentangle. He was born in Glasgow and, particularly in his early career, was sometimes characterised as a British Bob Dylan. This, however, was misleading, in that Jansch’s best work has always been fundamentally instrument-driven unlike Dylan’s, which is primarily lyric-based. In the 1960s, he was heavily infuenced by the guitarist Davy Graham and folk singers such as Anne Briggs. His work influenced such artists as Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler, Led Zeppelin, Nick Drake, and Neil Young. He earned a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 BBC Folk Awards.

Rosemary Lane is the album for me closely followed by Jack Orion. The title tracks on both leave me reeling. I love his stuff with Pentangle also, especially the first five albums. Roll on Bert, you're a true living genius. I'm totally hung up on "Silly Woman" from Rosemary Lane. Beautiful...

Why so many listeners? He is a true legend who still produces wonderful albums today. "He completely re-invented guitar playing and set a standard that is still unequalled today…without Bert Jansch, rock music as it developed in the ‘60s and ‘70s would have been very different. You hear him in Nick Drake, Pete Townshend, Donovan, The Beatles, Jimmy Page and Neil Young. There are people playing guitar who don’t even realise they’ve been influenced by him." - Johnny Marr

Yeah, I shouldn't get drawn into the "who's better than who" game when it comes to music, it's utterly futile. Listen, I like Jansch, but he's nowhere near Dylan, you can't compare them. Dylan has about 40 GREAT albums, most of 'em pure genius, Jansch has like 20 good songs, now while these are sublime, you can't compare the two.
