San Francisco, United States (2005 – present)

Beltaine’s Fire is one of very few bands playing Celtic Hip Hop fusion. Their music combines melodies inspired by the traditional music of the Celtic diaspora community, from Ireland to Appalachia, with melodic funky bass lines, a driving rhythm section, and rap vocals by Emcee Lynx.

Their lyrics are deeply passionately human and politically conscious in the tradition of hip hop acts like Public Enemy, Dead Prez, and Paris and Celtic artists like the Wolfe Tones and Dick Gaughan ,while their instrumental work draws comparisons to groups like Shooglenifty, Croft No. Five, Marxman, and Manau.

Their first album, The Weapon of the Future, was released Dec. 11, 2007 & their second album, Liberty, was released Sept. 12, 2008. Both are available from their website, BeltainesFire.com. Their current lineup is Lynx (vocals), Laura (bass), K8R (Cello and Mandolin), John (Electric Banjo), and Todd (Percussion).

The band was originally formed in San Francisco, California.in August of 2005 as a collaboration between Emcee Lynx and an experimental Celtic/Folk/Rock Duo called The Wills Wilde that combined fiddle and electric guitar with heavy effects and looping. Lynx recruited Laura Noel on Bass and Chris Darbeyshire on drums to make the group a quintet. By January of 2006 tensions between the members threatened to tear the group apart and Lynx, Laura, and Chris decided to go their own way, keeping the name Beltaine’s Fire. The Wills Wilde broke up a few months later.

Not bad, though sometimes seems too lazy. Nice anyway, especially 'To condemn the ocean'. Like the idea of mixing celtic folk with rap music. Also, 'anarchist celtic pagan folk rap' would make an awesome tag.

This group is rockin! Just saw them at the Celtic Festival in Grass Valley over the weekend. Just a freaking awesome sound and message. I really hope they make it down to Sac sometime! My g/f and I really want to see them again, so we might just use it as a good excuse to take a trip down to the Bay Area after the semester is over. I highly recommend them to anyone with an open and free mind....liking celtic music helps too :P

Interesting stuff. I'm not a hip-hop fan at all, but I like, go figure ;-) This is also the first real local talent I've come across on lastfm, so sweet! Only the Bay Area could come up with anarcho-Celtic rap...
