Biography

New Orleans, Louisiana, United States (2002 – present)

Born in the dense heat of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, Belong is a collaborative effort between Turk Dietrich and Michael Jones, whose debut album, “October Language”, goes beyond traditional song structure to a place where melodic figures blur, and textures are gorgeously sculpted into an ocean of sound. Belong began on the WestBank of New Orleans in 2002, but it was not until 2004 that “October Language” was made. The album was assembled, composed, and produced in Dietrich’s bedroom studio; however, the inspiration for the songs goes well beyond the walls. The album encapsulates their hometown of New Orleans, at once bathed in sunlight and colors, yet dripping in decay and a rich sadness. It is a record that attempts to display the beauty in things that are worn, decayed or destroyed.

Following in the tradition of bands like My Bloody Valentine and Gas, guitars, synths and other musical sources are wrenched from their typical tones, revealing themselves in bright shards of distortion. Melodies are similarly enveloped in a sort of aural atrophy, forever repeating their blurring calls. At the end, all that remains is a noise so potent it leaves the sonic equivalent of the sun’s imprint on a retina.

Turk Dietrich has previously collaborated with Telefon Tel Aviv’s Joshua Eustis under the name Benelli, whose remix of Nine Inch Nails’ “The Frail (Version)” is found on the acclaimed NIN EP “Things Falling Apart”. Eustis played a small part in the production of “October Language”, in addition to playing slide guitar on the album’s title track.

"Common Era" has an interesting sound, but I prefer the textures of "October Language."

I saw them at SXSW in 2006. Very visual performance. I think they opened for Explosions in the Sky at some point too.

Anyone have recommendations for similar music to Colorloss Record and Same Places? It's different from their older and newer releases, and I'd love to find more music of that type. Not even sure what genres to look under.

I came on this shout box last night, miserable and without sleep, to see if there was any information on a third album. This made me happier. I don't know what I'd do without Belong.

MBV to APTBS to Belong is like switching boats in a cosmic ocean of perfect distortion from a small, cozy, velvet-lined two-seater where a presence like a lover seems near, to a dirty, rickety, jury-rigged powerboat, outboard engine half the size of the boat and possessed, slowly chipping away at the ship through mindless wear and malevolent intent as you rip across the waves. Then as the ship begins to take on water, you come across a massive, eerie, derelict navy gunboat with rustholes, no working lights. You leap onto it as the powerboat flings apart, and it rumbles to unlife, a vessel haunted with a more encompassing and vague presence. Still without a single light, it grinds you through oppressive, terrifying nights and delirious, maddening days into the middle of the ocean, as you enter a searing, overwhelming enlightenment about your journey. The haunting has followed you from ship to ship, but the ships weren't possessed: it was the entire ocean.

In 2011, Belong drops a new album, then last year A Place To Bury Strangers drops a new album and now 2013 kicks off with My Bloody Valentine dropping a new album. Maybe this year they can all go on tour together? I would literally do ANYTHING to attend a concert with that lineup.

I don't think Common Era is a shoegaze record at all.

I accumulated a few hundred albums this year, and yours is the only one I went out and bought after I listened to it. Please keep it up.
