After organizing a recording session with a pedal steel guitarist, Beck realized that he did not have any country songs to record. In the hours before picking the guitarist up to take him to the studio, Beck quickly penned this country song.

Johnny Cash would later cover Rowboat, after initially seeing Beck's performance during an opening for one of his shows.
