Was the last thing I expected to hear from my next runner up guitar virtuoso, homegrown Geva Alon, whose words were uttered to me just an hour before the doors opened to let us into Madison Square Garden where we pilgrimaged to see Pearl Jam on their 2008 two day stint. Thoroughly-rock-schooled Geva was genuinely excited to have my 'Ten-Club' ticket pair given to him and his lovely wife Karin for them to catch their first live glimpse of a band I have ardently followed through many shows before.

His equivalent enthusiasm drawn from the likes of Neil Young, David Bowie and Tom Verlaine, Geva Alon's music has been described as passionate, inventive, and mesmerizing, but truly defining the gripping quality of his sound transcends words. Similar sentiment resonates from Alon's latest and most personal solo venture aptly named Get Closer [/album], which was produced by thom monahan…

  • Strange connections

    19 Jan 2010, 18:23 by LostArk

In my travels I have come across some strange connections between artists I wouldn't expect:

Chi-A.D. is Dave Young. He started out playing synths for black metal pioneers Venom under the pseudonym VMX. Later well known for being a part of UK Hardtrance act The Secret and Goa act Chi-A.D.

Jesse Sykes, relation to Jamie Sykes of Burning Witch?

Galloglass features guest solos by Curran Murphy (Nevermore, Annihilator) and Jeff Waters (Annihilator) on their second album, Heavenseeker.

Outstanding stoner doom outfit Witch consists of members from Dinosaur Jr. and Feathers, among others.

BS 2000 once toured with Le Tigre in Japan. This might not strike you as odd if you didn't know that BS 2000 is the side project of the Beastie Boys ' own Adam "Adrock" Horovitz. BS 2000 also contributed the track The Scrappy to the Jet Set Radio Future soundtrack.

Toni Halliday, lead singer of Curve, is the vocalist in the Freaky Chakra track Budded on Earth to Bloom in Heaven…

    1. Pete Molinari – A Virtual Landslide

Fastna inte vid inledande “Blonde On Blonde»-pastischen “It Came Out Of The Wilderness«.

  • And That Was The Week That Was!

    18 Aug 2007, 02:24 by mrtim1420

Strange last week. Some good things, some not-so-good things. More of each than usual, it seems.

Saturday: Got to see a friend that I never see enough before she leaves for too long of a time. Got to stop by Rhino Records. Relaxed dinner with parents. Feeling good. Too-rah-loo-rah-lay.

Sunday: Stomach is really bad today. Hit a guy on a bike with my car (He wasn't hurt at all...and it was his fault actually, not mine). When I hit him, I was listening to "Ich bin der Welt Abhanden gekommen" by Mahler. Strained evening discussing how to handle this. No dinner cause my stomach feels so bad. Only good thing: I'm feeling okay enough to eat something late, so I get to the frozen yogurt place 5 minutes after they closed...but they let me in anyway.

Monday: Stomach bad. Real stressed just from trying to deal with this accident thing. But it works out by the late evening. I help him pay for his bike, and we don't report it to insurance. …

When did everyone trade in their Gang of Four records for The Beach Boys and good God- did freak folk bridge that gap between trends?

Suddenly it seems as if every band has 30 layers of vocals and every single member has a masters degree in harmony. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice change of pace. I was getting tired of Talking Heads knock off bands and angular guitars but alas like all good trends, I foresee this newest craze to reach burn out level in no time.

    Anyhow...

I hereby (hear + buy) claim 2007 the year of sun kissed layered melodies and sounds inspired by pets.(wink wink)

Feel free to add to my list. I know there are really thousands of artists out there who fall under this category.

    Grizzly Bear
    The Explorer's Club
    Field Music
    The Ruby Suns
    Neutral Milk Hotel
    The Besnard Lakes
