Baltimore, Maryland, United States (2005 – present)

Beach House is a dream pop group that formed in 2005 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The group consists of Victoria Legrand (vocals, organ) and Alex Scally (guitar, keyboards). Legrand is the niece of composer Michel Legrand. The group has released four albums: 2006’s “Beach House”, 2008’s “Devotion”, 2010’s “Teen Dream” and “Bloom”, released in May 2012 by Sub Pop Records.

Within a year of formation, the group charmed music enthusiasts across the blogosphere with their languid songcraft, while the eerie warmth of “Apple Orchard” landed on Pitchfork’s Infinite Mixtape MP3 series in August . Two months later, Beach House issued their eponymous debut album for Carpark. Fall shows with labelmates Over The Atlantic were also scheduled.

Victoria can also be heard on Frenemies’ Birds in High School album. She and Chris Freeland created harmonies on the song Waiting for the Ambulance. Victoria can also be heard on Grizzly Bear’s 2009 release “Veckatimest” and she sings on “Slow Life”, a Grizzly Bear track featured on the official soundtrack for Twilight: New Moon.

In September of 2009 Sub Pop Records announced that Beach House had signed and that a follow up album to 2008’s “Devotion”, “Teen Dream” would be released in early 2010.

Beach House was featured as a cover story in a January 2010 issue of the Washington Post magazine.

Hannes! I wish I would have listened more carefully when you told me about Beach House. It's a pity I haven't discovered them until now...

ideally a single is released shortly after the northern exposure tour ends and then album announcement/tour dates but i'm not getting my hopes up

They're sadly rapidly running out of time for that to happen.

THIS ALBUM NEEDS TO DROP THIS YEAR. Not only because I want to hear it, but also because the two year rule is weirdly important to me and I want it to live on.

honorable mentions? sure. you came to me, for the beautiful sounding keyboard melody and those "la la la la's." d.a.r.l.i.n.g. whose conclusion should have been a lot longer, and was brilliantly interpolated into "silver soul." "silver soul" because those "ah-ah's" hit the spot. "other people"'s conclusion makes me groove so hard and the "ooooooooooooh"s are so damn good.

    4. used to be [teen dream version]. used to be honestly could take on the #1 #2 or #3 spot but it's not as anthemic or cathartic as the others. but this conclusion and hell, this song in general is where beach house really puts other bands to shame when it comes to layering sounds. starting at 2:40 with "coming home, any day now...." is not only the best transition that beach house has ever done but one of the best transitions in modern music period. 5. walk in the park. it was hard to choose a fifth one, honestly this list can go on forever. but i love this because of how it builds up into a rather explosive (for beach house standards) finish, with victoria emphatically singing, "more, you want more? you tell me." the magic in this one is how you choose to interpret it. "you want more? you TELL me." --as in, communicate your needs in this relationship. OR "you want more? you tell me..." --as in, i'm already giving you my maximum, and now you want more...

top 5 beach house song conclusions: 1. the arrangement. my god i love this conclusion. the transition into those keyboard notes are to die for. the melody invokes so much joy and euphoria. and then the "the arrangement of lies..." fade out just ties the whole thing together. 2. take care. this incorporates another gorgeous repetitive fade out of "I'll take care of you, that's true". I'll be honest, the lyrical sentiment of taking care of someone makes this special to me as much as it does musically. the sighing of "ahhh AHHH ahhhh" fits well too. 3. home again. same technique as take care and the arrangement (are you paying attention?) this one is special because of the four-line repetition is satisfying aurally, the sentiment of "home again, be here, be with me" is awesome and the imagery evoked with "will i swim out of your ocean" is also very satisfying. moving on.
