• Revisited: Badly Drawn Boy/Have You Fed The Fish

Damon Gough is a genius. There isn't really much to add to that statement, but since I've been listening to Have You Fed The Fish again, and since I've started this journal entry, I'm going to knock myself out by adding more.

The lack of critical acclaim since his Mercury Prize winning debut, in comparison with the mindless fawning that happens over the turgid outpourings of Coldplay or the idiotic attempts to seem hip and cool by claiming a backward looking bunch of miserabilists from Glasgow are the best things since sliced Mary Chain, is astounding.

I remember HYFTF being on the receiving end of lukewarm reviews when it came out. The Hour of Bewilderbeast was an outstanding debut, it's true, but HYFTF is a completely different kettle of piscine activity.

Perhaps the reaction was something akin to the hiss of Judas when Dylan went electric, because HYFTF is an electric album. Not just in the use of more electronic instrumentation…
  • Art Deco Surroundings The Perfect Foil for Boy from Dunstable

Fri 23 Feb – Badly Drawn Boy

From the support act of Malcolm Middleton performing tracks from 2005's Into The Woods and this year's A Brighter Beat to the sight of Edie and Oscar Gough air drumming to Pissing in the Wind, this was one of the gigs of the year.

    And it's only February.

Stockport Plaza was possibly the star of the show, with its Art Deco listed building splendour, and it worked its magic on Mr Gough, who was more at home on the stage than is often seen.

The set was a perfect mix of tracks from latest long player, and return to glorious form, Born in the U.K. as well as The Hour of Bewilderbeast, About a Boy, Have You Fed the Fish? and One Plus One Is One.

Songs included The Time Of Times, The Further I Slide, Donna and Blitzen, Nothing's Gonna Change Your Mind, Welcome To The Overground, Silent Sigh, All Possibilities, The Shining, Magic In The Air, Pissing In The Wind, Walk You Home Tonight and more that I can't remember!
