Semichronic, that is an awesome interpretation. You inspired me to post mine. I think it's about human beings attempting to look to God for the answers to their questions. The first verse is human spirituality at its most basic - the man looks to his creator and asks what his purpose is. "Us animals need something to do." The only response is silence, but the man still feels there's an answer. The second verse is human beings attempting to reach God through ritual and religion. He questions the existence of a soul (machines need a ghost?) but again there's no answer. The third verse is about the meaning of life. "Yeah, you're short but are you brutish and mean?" Again, and even in death, there's no answer. Been a fan for years, but this is actually my favorite BR song.

@ Poghril - It's basically a pile of references to chosen modern theories concerning human nature. Goes as following: Verse one; Desmond Morris, an ethologist who wrote 'The Human Zoo', treating more or less about the role of biological nature of our species on contemporary culture, Verse two; Descartes and his 'De Homine' - theory of dualism in frames of a 'structure' of human being, Verse three; Thomas Hobbes - 'Homo homini lupus est', ('Bellum omnium contra omnies'), negative view on how humans are as separate beings. -That's it for theory. For me it's a critical look on modern philosophical theories which- ironically- have pretty desperate theoretical background and don't even try to stay objective in terms of the whole of known human history, becoming the direct critic on contemporary events or just tools for supporting the controversial actions, as in case of Descartes. That's how I got it, but I might be wrong. I was actually quite surprised that these are Brett's lyrics.
