They were based in the BBC’s Maida Vale studios in London, gradually growing outwards from the then legendary Room 13. The techniques and music that they produced has made the department one of the biggest influences on electronic music then and today.
The Workshop will always be associated with the classic “Dr Who” theme and its variations, although one of their employees, Delia Derbyshire, has now been rightfully credited with its original realisation. This had been the wish of Ron Grainer, the credited composer, but the corporate rules of the BBC prevented this at the time.
