Biography

There are, at least, four artists known as Azimuth: 1) A pseudonym of pianist Ed Goldfarb (on Sockspider Promotions). 2) A Brasilian trio (best known as Azymuth & aka Azimüth). 3) A UK trio (on ECM). 4) Russian drone/noise one-man project (signed to Nurn Records/Dead Rabbit records).

1) A pseudonym of pianist Ed Goldfarb, who’s releases include Photographs. Official site: http://AzimuthPiano.com.

2) A electric trio (aka Azimüth & Azymuth), from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Formed in the late 1960s, the members are José Roberto Bertrami (keyboards), Alex Malheiros (bass, guitars) & Ivan Conti (drums, percussion). They had a major hit with “Jazz Carnival” (as Azymüth around, 1980 or 1981) & released a string of albums, on Milestone, in the 1980s. Since the 80s, they have released albums on Far Out (London), whilst remaining based in Brazil & continuing to tour in Europe.

3) A UK chamber jazz trio, of Norma Winstone (vocals), John Taylor (piano) & Kenny Wheeler (horns) - founded 1977. They have made several recordings for ECM & performed in Europe & North America.

The John & Norma (married duo), approached ECM proprietor Manfred Eicher - in desperation, John later admitted - with a demo tape. Eicher suggested adding a fluegelhorn to the duo, prompting them to contact an old associate, Kenny.

This is not the same band. So it's not written as "Azymuth". This band is : John Taylor (Piano), Kenny Wheeler (Trumpet, Flugelhorn), Norma Winstone (Vocals) And someone should remove that picture, which has nothing to do with Azimuth. If there is a band called Azimüth, then it shouldnt be here, because of the different letter in the name.

This is the same group with Malhieros, Bertrami and Conti. But this not the way their name is spelled. It's Azymuth.
