  • Podsumowując 09...

    1 Jan 2010, 12:49 by Trapciol

    Najważniejszy album roku:
    1. Pure Reason Revolution - Amor Vincit Omnia

Album długooczekiwany przez fanów świetnego "The Dark Third". Wielu z nich rozczarował... tym że nie jest jego kopią! A wręcz zupełnie innym podejściem do muzyki.

    2. Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition

Mariusz Duda z kolegami wciąż pewnie podąża wytyczoną parę lat temu drogą. Riverside jednak wciąż się rozwija wzbogacając swą muzykę o nowe elementy.

    3. Crippled Black Phoenix - The Resurrectionists / Night Raider

Filmowo, floydowo, postrocokowo... kołysze ta muzyka. Mimo że album dwupłytowy, nie ma mowy o nudzie.

    4. Tides From Nebula - Aura
    5. George Dorn Screams - O'Malley's Bar
    6. Wolfmother - Cosmic Egg
    7. Radio Moscow - Brain Cycles
    8. Rodrigo y Gabriela - 11:11

  • Top 50 Artists - related questions

    31 Dec 2009, 20:52 by Nallis

Perhaps this year I will put some effort into something on some sites... Seeing as Last.fm is music, this seems a good place for it, seeing as it has helped me endlessly in my quest to find new music.

So, I stole this from somewhere, cos I r a thieving child I am... but it is questions relating to the top 50 artists if I understand correctly, so here goes...

(I do get the feeling that I have more of a top 20 to what I listen to most but nevertheless!)

    -----

How did you get into 31?
    Imogen Heap
I honestly have no idea, all I can recall is having an album of hers, (Speak for Yourself) and it coming on the iTunes party shuffle thingy while playing WoW and I got sickeningly hooked. Very strange stuff!

What was the first song you ever heard by 22?
    Avantasia
I can't be certain at all, I know it was off one of the Metal Opera albums... I didn't listen to it in order at first because clever clogs me didn't realise >.<

What is your favorite lyric by 29?
Blinded by the Light - Manfred Mann

"Some silicone sister with a manager mister told me I go what it takes
She said 'I'll turn you on sonny to something strong,
play the song with the funky break'"

The lyrics aren't much to look at to be fair, but that song... does 'things' to me, lol. It is simply fantastic and that is that!

What is your favorite album by 49?
    Diana Ross

I can't say yet, it's only recently I acquired more than the few albums I had so I'll need to get working on them first. I can honestly say though that the album 'Diana' that PlayI'm Coming Out is from... I adore it simply cos it has that track!

How many albums by 13 do you own?
    Rod Stewart
I have them all bar the one that came out this year... I have no idea how many albums that as cos all those songbook ones made it alot!

What is your favorite song by 50?
    lynard skynard
    Freebird

Is there a song by 4 that makes you sad?
    Michael Jackson
    PlayMan In The Mirror

That is virtually impossible to not be sad about since he died, I was fine with it before.

What is your favorite song by 15?
    The Human League
    PlayMirror Man

What is your favorite song by 5?
    Lindisfarne
    PlayRun For Home
...but I adore too many really.

Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy?
    David Bowie
...eeee... I can't think of anything off the top of my head despite being in love with Bowie... :(

What is your favorite album by 40?
    Steve Miller Band
I don't remember the album that PlayJungle Love is from?

What is your favorite song by 12?
    Asia
PlayRide Easy or PlayDays Like These

What is a good memory you have involving 33?
    Ayreon
Day Sixteen: Loser or Day Seven: Hope
Both were songs I obsessively listened to during my break up period... both are quite empowering songs. I dare anyone to give up on anything when being egged on by such stuff.

What is your favorite song by 37?
    Dan Hill
It's a Long Road... what else?

Have you ever seen.......I erased the number by accident........live?
    REO Speedwagon
    Never. :'(

    The Offspring
Self Esteem - I think, I amn't sure, I just recall buying two albums cos I heard something.

What is your favorite album by 45?

What is the first song you ever heard by 38?
    T.Rex
Children Of The Revolution, go figure

What is your favorite lyric by 3?
    Accept
This is tough, and near impossible, but I'll go for something from PlayMidnight Highway since it's such a positive song and I like the feeling of freedom I get from it:

"Midnight sky is bright and clear
    New moon on the right
    All at once, risin' haze
    The freeway is my life"

What is your favorite song by 2?
    Alice Cooper
Devil's Food (alternate version) or I Am the Future

    You've got the love
That is like... nearly the ultimate happy-making song... bad word choice, but yeh!

What is your favorite album by 9?
    Cyndi Lauper
Have none, I like one of the greatest hits ones due to the in concert version of PlayGirls Just Want To Have Fun which is way different and fandabydosey, lol... 'PlayHey Now (Girls Just Want to Have Fun)'

What is the worst song by 46?
    Kate Bush
I haven't really listened to anything that I thought was 'omg awful' etc.

What was the first song you heard by 34?
    Judas Priest
I have NO idea... I would of heard them in my childhood and not realised track names, but the first song I heard upon being reintroduced was Hell Is Home (yay).

(I think I've mucked up the counting... *cough*)

  • EPIC WIN from the 00s

    30 Dec 2009, 18:44 by StakerSen

Well, I suppose everyone's doing this now. If you're just passing by, check these out.

DISCLAIMER: this isn't proof read and I don't care if you spot mistakes. >_<
Also, I'm right, since I have the best musical taste ever. But if you do want to challenge me, recommend me something I haven't heard/missed this decade.

None of any of this is in any particular order.

    Best albums from the 00s

In order to do this, I decided to write up a short list, and then a list of finalists, before the final 5:

    Devin Townsend - Terria
    Devin Townsend - Synchestra
Devin Townsend - Ziltoid The Omnicient
    DragonForce - Ultra Beatdown
Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
    Agalloch - The Mantle
    Sylvan - Posthumous Silence
    Shadow Gallery - Room V
    Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
Dream Theater - Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Dream Theater - Live Scenes From New York
    IQ - The Seventh House
God Is an Astronaut - God Is An Astronaut
This Will Destroy You - This Will Destroy You

Not a bad set, but the chosen ones must be:

Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
I chose this above their "magnum opus", The Mantle, for a number of reasons, but Ashes itself wasn't received well by the fans. The main reason for this was the lack of folk elements - there's still acoustic stuff, but not as much as before. It's heavier overall, which is brilliant. The album's dominated by more epic tracks, like an Opeth album. PlayFalling Snow (mentioned later ^_^) has to be my favourite black/death metal song. PlayLimbs opens it brilliantly. The epic at the end is also very good, particularly Bloodbirds. What does bring this down is the last track, which is actually just noise, but even without that, it's 52 minutes of post black metal. YES.

    Devin Townsend - Synchestra
Ah man, this album has everything. It's the most varied of all my choice, in all aspects. There's the soft acoustic brilliance of the opener, Let it Roll, to the quirky and brutal Hypergeek, proggy Triumph, doom metal styled Judgement, gloriously overdrived A Simple Lullaby, the oddly relaxing Sunset, and a great finale from Notes from Africa and Sunshine and Happiness. Brilliant. If there ever was a man to nail my musical taste, it would be this genius right here.

    Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
I can never neglect the good old fashioned symphonic rock bands such as Genesis or Yes. Transatlantic are brilliant because they're a super-group intent on bringing back that classic sound. Members of Marillion, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings and the one and only Neal Morse make an amazing sound together, crafting their music quickly but leaving it well refined. Their first album was good but this one really is great. The two epic which bookend the album - Duel With the Devil and Stranger in Your Soul - are up there with the immortal epics of the 70s, with the less brilliant Suite Charlotte Pike appealing particularly to Beatles fans. The album also features the awesome piano ballad Bridge Across Forever itself. I can't wait to see them live.

    Shadow Gallery - Room V
Generic prog metal? Well, perhaps, but this album really is awesome. The second album in a series of 2 concept albums, Room V features everything it needs to succeed - amazing musicians (particularly the guitars, giving us amazing Encrypted), awesome vocals (RIP Baker), a cool story (cheesy as it may be, it's not quite Ayreon), intense riffs and mind blowing instrumental sections. I would go as far as saying this is better than anything Dream Theater has offered us this decade. Highlights include Torn, VowThe Archer of Ben Salem, and the utterly amazing Rain.

    IQ - The Seventh House
I was surprised to see myself putting this down. Is it really that good? The Wrong Side of Wierd is a great opener. Erosion brings things down a little, but the is the title track is full of fantastic passages. IQ have always been "generic" prog, but that hasn't got in the way of it being awesome. The classic Supper's Ready finale deserves its place in this track. Zero Hour is awesome, building to a fantastic finale, and the almost perfect Guiding Light. This deserves to be here. It's definitely not the best one, but it's in the top 5.

So, top songs? I'll make this painless for you. Still no particular order:

    PlayA Three-Legged Workhorse
The most beautiful song ever. If only all Post Rock was like this. The riff is amazing, drums are spot on, the intensity, the emotion... ah, they may have arrived late to the scene, but This Will have a long, long career ahead of them.

    PlayFalling Snow
Mentioned above, this track really is a brilliant song. I'm no expert on black metal but I doubt, in my travels, that I'll find anything above this. Epic lyrics, brilliant riffs, crazy drumming...

    Guiding Light
Also mentioned above, this is a piano ballad with a brilliant, indulgent, proggy instrumental section, strapped into the middle. Should it work? Maybe not, but if just flows together so well, particularity the ending, with a short but sweet, screeching guitar solo.

    Stagnant
I could have equally chosen PlaySlow Me Down here, since both tracks are similar in essence. They're short, heavy, and, admittedly, a bit poppy, but that won't stop me - the lyrics to Stagnant are uplifting beyond any power ballad, the solo is excellent, the vocals are amazing... I can't praise this enough.

    Rain
EPIC WIN. Prog metal at its best.
My flesh and blood it's all that's left my heritage!
From life to death to dust so through the woods I search!
    Complete disconnect!
Your shelter comes to cover meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
  • Music discoveries of December 2009

    29 Dec 2009, 22:10 by adg211288

The first in a regular journal which I thought I might take up writing.

The best discovery for me this month was Transatlantic - a band which I'd been meaning to check out for some time because they share a drummer with Dream Theater in Mike Portnoy. One of their vocalists is also Neal Morse of Spock's Beard fame, neither of which I am really a fan of but I do like his voice, having heard him sing on an Ayreon song. Anyway I managed to check out their latest offering The Whirlwind, an album which features a 77 minute song on its main disc, with 4 originals and 4 covers on the special edition bonus disc. It's well worth owning for the main disc, though the extra stuff isn't bad in its own right. It's definitely one of the best albums I've heard from this year and the band has made such an impression on me I've ordered all three of their studio albums, SMPTe, Bridge Across Forever and the aforementioned The Whirlwind.

Another great discovery this month was Pharaoh, a power metal band, who had a thread made about them in my forum and I managed to get a hold of their most recent offering Be Gone. The band has re-kindled my interest in power metal and hope to see some recommendations in the comments section here. This discovery is also to thank for the next one.

Control Denied. The prog/power metal band formed by the late Chuck Schuldiner of Death fame. Same singer as Pharaoh, which was what finally got me around to checking them out, as I'd been meaning to for ages, being a fan of Death already.

Most recently I got around to checking out the music of Doro. Only just started listening this evening but I've been checking out the full tracks on her Last.fm page and sounding really good, classic heavy metal.

Amberian Dawn - a symphonic power metal act. Just been checking out their first album River Of Tuoni. Good vocals, good riffs. Managed to get their debut off of Play.com for the great price of £3.60, because apparently the CD case has a small crack in it. Big deal, I'll be having that!

Also did some re-discovering this month, the bands in question being Blind Guardian and Alice in Chains. I've had at least 1 albums by each of them but got my backside in gear to get some more Blind Guardian recently, buying the albums Follow The Blind, Somewhere Far Beyond, and Imaginations From The Other Side. For Alice in Chains in my opinion they made the album of the year with Black Gives Way To Blue, which made me order copies of Dirt and Alice in Chains, which completes my collection of their full length albums (when they come through my letter box anyway), with just the Sap EP missing from the major releases.

    Until next month,
