Austin has scored over twenty five feature films, most notably the 2009 Sundance hit GRACE, as well as the 2008 Sundance Audience Award winner CAPTAIN ABU RAED. His score for the former garnered many horror film genre accolades, including a nomination at the 2010 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards for ‘Best Original Score,’ and Vision in Sound’s Top Ten Scores for 2009. The latter was listed by the LA Times as a contender for the 2009 Academy Awards for ‘Best Original Score’ and also won Austin the Hollywood Music Award for “Best New Composer.” The combined success of those films, along with several others, prompted The Hollywood Reporter to list Austin as one of 15 composers “Primed to take their place on the A-list,” as well as a nomination by the International Film Music Critics Association for “Breakout Composer of the Year.”

In addition to feature films, Austin has a tremendous passion for the world of game scoring. His first major game score for thatgamecompany’s flOw in 2006 earned Austin a British Academy Award nomination and triple nominations at the Game Audio Network Guild awards (“Innovative use of Audio,” “Best Interactive Score” and winning for “Rookie of the Year.”). Perhaps most notably, his score for thatgamecompany’s much lauded ‘Journey’ (2012) debuted as #1 in iTunes’ game soundtrack charts (Grammy 2012 nominated for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media).

Does anyone know the name of that bell-like instrument we hear all over the soundtrack? I love the sound and want to listen to more music with it. It sounds like a gamelan but I would like to know more.

what makes the soundtrack special is its deep integration with the events of the game. the composer worked closely with the dev team to make the music react to specific events that the player enacts, or particular places he/she visits; it's not just blandly looping short musical pieces like other games do--the score is almost as much of a character as the journeyman is.

I'm mostly with arglactable on this one. While it has its moments and is decently composed overall, it's in no way groundbreaking. Though I'm glad a game finally got some love at the Grammys.

Journey has the most overrated soundtrack of the year. It has its moments, but a good deal of it is just noodling around a with simple theme and some meandering ambiance. It seems like people just feel some kind of obligation to give this game credit for more than it actually did. It's a cool experience, but it's nothing revolutionary. And what is with this man's fixation on plucked string instruments (not just in the Journey soundtrack).
