About this album
Slaughter Of The Soul is a 1995 album by Swedish melodic death metal band At the Gates, being their fourth full-length album release. It is considered a genre classic by many fans, and was largely responsible for establishing the Gothenburg scene, providing somewhat of an archetype for new Melodic Death Metal bands.
Slaughter of the Soul was re-released in 2002 and 2007.

Extreme metal is black, death, thrash, and arguably some forms of doom metal on the first level of division. Grind is not extreme metal, although it is a fusion genre of an extreme metal subgenre. This falls into melodic death metal, if you think this album can be generalized as death metal and placed amongst bands like Unleashed, Autopsy, and Obituary, you need to take a second listening.

There is not any metalcore in this album at all, metalcore is stuff like Integrity. Melodic metalcore bands were strongly influenced by this album, but there is ZERO metalcore in here. By melodeath standards it is moderately popular, by death metal standards it is very popular. Who cares about that though, I don't like the repetitive riffing, simplistic song structure, and the over-produced sound (at least by my standards).

The production values on the early stuff may bother you if you generally listen to sugar-coated pop music. Otherwise, you won't have problems with it. The songs here could work if they were 1 minute long each, because the repetition is annoying.
