Rotterdam and The Hague, Netherlands (1988 – present)

Asrai is a female fronted gothic metal band originating from the area around Rotterdam and The Hague, Netherlands . Originally formed in 1988 by sisters Margriet and Karin, they produced several demos between 1989 and 1994 which gained them national popularity and radio play both in Netherlands and central Europe. In 1997 they released their debut As Voices Speak on the German Poison Ivy label (extremely indie distribution channel) and issued a German release of the album later that year.

Over the next few years Asrai worked on perfecting their sound, image, and musical relationships - picking up Manon, Rik and Martin as permanent members to create the rich and epic sound they have today.

Touch in the Dark was recorded on indie Dutch-euro label Transmission Records in 2004 (produced by German gothic metal studio wizard Roman Schoensee of The Bloodline/Dreamside) and mixed by Sasha Peath.

They have appeared at over 20 European festivals in 2005 and 2006, and showcased their new single at Paradiso in Amsterdam in May 2006. Asrai went 2008 on a European tour; The Darkest Tout, with Septhic Flesh, Gorgoroth, (now called Godseed), Moonspell and Cradle of Filth. And in 2010 Asrai was part of the Rubicon tour, with Unsun and Tristania.

Margriet - Vocals
Rik - Guitar
Manon - Synth

I usually don't go out of my way to look within this genre, as I'm a bit tired of the upteenth generic symphony-metal clones, But.. I try all the recommendations tossed my way and I was taken by surprise. Great mix of gothic metal and darkwave with beautiful vocal styles. <3 Delicious dark melodies.

@MustBeDreaming1: That is fucking stupid. I'm not even a huge fan of the band, but at least I know better than to judge a book by it's cover.

I know that in music sound is always more important than look... But sometimes look is so bad that I don't want to hear the sound, and Asrai is one of those cases. I will never give them a try, I think...
