The Unspoken Heard is the hip-hop collaborative of rapper Asheru and producer Blue Black. The group is often referred to as Asheru & Blue Black of the Unspoken Heard. They began getting significant recognition in underground hip-hop around the turn of the millennium. Their sound is reminiscent of the New York “new school” sound of the early ’90s, particularly that of the Native Tongues Posse.
Asheru (born Gabriel Benn on December 29th, 1974 in Columbia, Maryland) is an award winning, Black American Hip Hop artist, educator, and youth activist. He is a also a founding member of the Brooklyn based label, Seven Heads Entertainment.
Asheru has taken the independent move one step further with his own umbrella, Guerilla Arts Ink, LLC, which is also home to his Arts-in Education program Project NOMMO, and his publishing company, Arbor Day Publishing (ASCAP).
Over the years, Asheru has had the fortune of traveling and performing all over the United States, Europe, and Japan, both as a member of Unspoken Heard, and more recently as a solo artist. He has also had the experience of recording with some of the best emcees and producers in the game, including J-Live, El Da Sensai, Lone Catalysts, Grap Luva, Pete Rock, Geology, DJ Khalil of Self-Scientific, DJ Spinna and many others.
With critically acclaimed features on several 2004 releases such as the Halftooth Records compilation, “You Don’t Know the Half”, The Sound Providers LP, “An Evening with the Sound Providers”, and Jazzy Jeff’s “Hip Hop Forever”, Asheru dropped the 12” Black Moses b/w B.M.I.G., songs featured on the 2004 Unspoken Heard/Seven Heads release, 48 Months.
