2012 has been a pretty good year for Rock and Metal. Epicloud by Devin Townsend Project, Eremita by Ihsahn, Portal of I by Ne Obliviscaris, Time by Wintersun and a lot more albums! Album of the year for me is stuck between Devin, Ihsahn and Arjen.
The guy is a musical Chuck Norris. I don't really see the comparison but what the heck! :D Yah, in years I haven't listened to any new album as much as I have listened to Lost in the New Real. The concept really gets me. The future world described in the album actually feels scarily credible to me! :o Mostly.
If you're not really liking Lost in the New Real, give it more of a chance and more listens.. I did and it really grew on me. I like the whole vibe of the album a lot. It's got a very classic rock / Beatles feel to it that I've not really indulged myself in in a long time.. and along with Arjen's usual style/sound/technique, it makes for a really good album.
So it's Ayreon next, huh? Now that The Dream Sequencer lives a sad life on its own(?), this doesn't come as a total surprise. :) Would hope that Tommy Karevik will be a guest singer. Absolute emotion in that voice!
V I kind of understand what you mean. If this really was a try to freshen up his music, it didn't quite work. Still, I don't see what's there to change, it's perfect for me as it is! :) I think the concept and connections to Ayreon got me going more than the songs separately, although they are great as well!
Just listened to the first time. Can't really comment since I'm in awe. Perfect, once again! It worked even without massive layers of great guest singers! All I can say is, what themes, both explicitly and implicitly covered. What awesome music and artwork, and symbolism and references to political themes, music, to pretty much everything. What an awesome way to create a picture of this awful future world where not I and seemingly not the composer would want to live in (or would it be actual living at all? I think one of the many messages of this album is, get the fuck out of your virtual world and enjoy the world that's actually around you). Just picture perfect psychological masterpiece, yet again! Mr. L has definitely taken his pills as Arjen is back as splendidly as ever! Not only does he always make great music, lyrics and concepts, but Arjen also seems very humane with his views. I think part of my affection to his music is that I seem to share about 100% of his opinions...
My favourites are "The Social Recluse", "The space Hotel", "E-Police" and "Lost In The New Real". Love the album. The ending of disk 1 made me think of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_in_a_vat.
Given the record a few listens now.
Best songs: "Pink Beatles In A Purple Zeppelin", "E-police", "When I'm A Hundred Sixty-Four", "Yellowstone Memorial Day", "Dr. Slumbers Eternity Home", "Lost In The New Real", "Welcome To The Machine", "So Is There No God", "Battle Of Evermore" (Great Cover!!).
Weak Songs: Don't Switch Me Off - Only song on the record that I believe felt flat.
I'll give the album an overall score of 9/10. Really great album.
Pfft no weak songs. The only thing he made a mistake with was releasing Lost In The New Real about a week before the album was released, I would have loved to have been surprised with that track when it came on. Probably the best on the album. Really love The Social Recluse, Our Imperfect Race and the Welcome To The Machine cover :D
