Osobiście uważam, że 2009 to bardzo słaby rok. Jestem zażenowany formą takich zespołów jak Rammstein czy Scooter. Spodziewałem się, że skoro mają plany wydawnicze to jednak czymś pozytywnym zaskoczą. Owszem, po jednym utworze Waidmanns Heil oraz Second Skin... Tym gorzej dla tych drugich, że ten utwór był coverem. Reszta wykonawców, których słucham odpoczywała, albo wydawała koncertówki. Dwie z nich są w zestawieniu, pozostałe, jak np. The Touch of Evil: Live Priestów to kolejne odgrzewanie kotletów. Wydali coś, co 3 lata wcześniej wydano na DVD [+ te kilka utworów z Nostradamusa, bezsens, jak chcą wydawać koncertówkę to z większym rozmachem, a nie 1CD].

10. Within Temptation - An Acoustic Night At The Theatre - solidna koncertówka do słuchania [+ słabiutka Utopia w wersji studyjnej]. Nic więcej, stąd niskie miejsce.

09. Iron Maiden - Flight 666: The Original Soundtrack - po prostu świetny album live. Wyżej być nie może, bo mimo wszystko to tylko zapis koncertów.

08. Showtek - Analogue Players In A Digital World - jedyna pozycja nie mająca nic wspólnego z rockiem. Powiem krótko, tego oczekiwałem od zespołu Scooter w tym roku, a ci woleli stworzyć kaszanę. Cieszę się, że Showtek wydał taki album, bo jest bardzo miłą odskocznią. :)

07. The Cuts - Syreny Nad Miastem - jedna z dwóch polskich płyt w zestawieniu. Ten album bardzo pozytywnie mnie zaskoczył. Większość utworów na płycie trzyma naprawdę wysoki poziom.

06. W.A.S.P. - Babylon - nie są to pierwsze lata zespołu [cóż to była za muzyka], ale jest w tym albumie coś, co każe ustawić tryb 'repeat all'. :)

05. U.D.O. - Dominator - Udo to Udo, zawsze ten sam styl znany z najlepszych lat w zespole Accept. Szkoda, że nie dał rady wpaść do Polski w tym roku, ale już w lutym nie zawiedzie. Czekam na wspaniały koncert.

04. Arch Enemy - The Root Of All Evil - jeden z tych zespołów, które w tym roku przyszło mi poznać. Album naprawdę bardzo dobry, a wokalistka z płyty na płytę 'śpiewa' coraz lepiej. :)

03. KISS - Sonic Boom - świetny come back po latach wydawania 'grejtest hitsów'. Myślałem, że Gene i Paul wypadli z formy, a jednak nie. Peter Griffin tym razem nie zaliczy zgonu. :)

02. Halford - Halford III - Winter Songs - dzięki temu albumowi jestem w stanie nawet wybaczyć tę długą przerwę od wszelkich wieści od Judas Priest. Rob Halford wydał album zimowo-świąteczny...tak, trudno w to początkowo uwierzyć, ale efekt końcowy wgniata w ziemię. Głos tego faceta jest po prostu doskonały. Brawo, brawo, brawo.

01. Crystal Viper - Metal Nation - tak, nikogo oczy nie mylą. Pierwsze miejsce zajął polski zespół power/heavy metalowy z ostatnim albumem. Metal Nation to naprawdę świetne wydawnictwo, a im dłużej się go słucha, tym bardziej się ono podoba. Klimatem trochę przypomina pirackie albumy Running Wild, ale wnosi też coś swojego. Jeden z niewielu docenionych międzynarodowo zespołów z naszego kraju, a tak słabo znany u nas.

Tyle ode mnie, see you next year.

PS. Mam nadzieję, że będzie dużo dobrych albumów. Pierwszymi, na które czekam są "Promise and Terror" Blaze'a Bayleya no i oczywiście obiecany, nowy [ponoć ostatni już] album Iron Maiden. 2010 - przybywaj!

I know it's a long and disturbing list of connections and some of you may hate it but... who cares? Title of the journal says it is something personal, so it's fine :).

Arch Enemy - Rise Of The Tyrant

I sort of feel sorry for Arch Enemy. "Tr00" Metal fans dismiss them as a shitty Gothenburg knock-off, and then the fans they do have only listen to them because:

A)Their singer has boobies
B)To be ironic
C)Because Arch Enemy are the only br00talz they can find to show off
D)Because they like the music

Now option D only applies ten percent of the time. Anyway, to explain the hate for Arch Enemy we need a quick history lesson! That's right assholes, you may have finished school but the real torture has just begun:

Arch Enemy formed in 1996 by Michael Amott (legendary guitarist, has played in such legendary bands as Carnage and Carcass among others) and Johan Liiva (also of Carnage, though he left before the recording of Dark Recollections). Anyway, Arch Enemy's first three albums were well recieved by the Metal community. However, in 2000 Liiva was asked to quit the band, Anyway, Angela Gossow (of, um...Mistress and Asmodina fame) soon replaced Liiva as vocalist. Bad move. Now Gossow is a decent vocalist, though not the best, but many did not like Gossow as a vocalist. Anyway, each album Arch Enemy have released since have been regarded as heading for the mainstream and "watered down Melodic Death Metal crap". Yeah, okay, what ever, fuck you Mr. Puremetaltoughguy, Arch Enemy are a good band, and let's face it, if Liiva was still the vocalist they'd be getting a much better reception regardless of how "watered down" their music became.

Anyway, after the somewhat experimental yet unsuccessful Doomsday Machine this is a great, no, legendary return to form. See what sets Arch Enemy apart from other Melodic Death Metal bands (besides the obvious female vocalist) is the Thrash influence to be found in their sound. Well that was more or less completely removed from Doomsday Machine. Well now it's back and it's as good as ever. You can hear a strong Thrash influence in tracks such as The Great Darkness and Blood On Your Hands, and it sounds great.

Musically, this album is full of great guitar work. Whether it's solos (Blood On Your Hands) or riffs (In This Shallow Grave) this album is full of fast yet melodic guitar work. The drums are your standard mix of Melodic Death and Thrash style drumming. Though on some tracks it really stands out (Blood On Your Hands.....again).

Angela's vocals are improving but she has a long way to go before she's up to the standards of fellow Melodeath vocalists such as Johan Hegg or Mikael Stanne (who is very underrated). She just gives off the feeling that she's trying too hard with the vocals. The growling is alright for the most part but it lacks power. And there are a few times where she attempts a deep death growl that comes off as somewhat laughable. Still, she has improved over the course of the last few albums, which is more than you can say for some vocalists (*cough*Chris 'I'm going to devour your cookies' Barnes*cough*).

If there's any problems with this album it would be the production. It's got one of those stupid "look ma, I'm being really loud" production jobs most albums seem to have now. Now that isn't that bad, but the drums, despite the decent drumming on display, sound horrible. They go from sounding mechanical one second to Fisher Price's My First Drum Kit the next. Also, the vocals are really high in the mix which isn't a good thing seeing as Gassow isn't that good a vocalist.

Anyway, Rise Of The Tyrant is a welcome return to form and a must have for fans of Thrash influenced Melodic Death metal.
