Tennessee based indie-rock outfit, Aquariums, is led by the bearded and bespectacled Texas native Martin Schneider. Schneider, who writes all of the music for the group, has created a new brand of Gothic Western music characterized by large dynamic builds contrasted with desperately quiet passages. Drawing influences from the dawn of Americana as well as the rock movements of the sixties and seventies Aquariums plays emotionally intense songs characterized by the veracity of rock in the vein of Roger Waters combined with the storytelling of Townes Van Zandt. Like these legends, Aquariums tackles dark subjects asserting the belief that what makes life beautiful is not always “sunny”. Now with two albums under their belt and a summer/fall tour in the works, Aquariums will be a group to keep a close eye on.
Conceptual Realizations, predominately a solo record was recorded, performed, and mixed alone. The album was recorded in this fashion because Schneider wanted to know what his personal musical limitations were. “I wanted to push myself in directions I may have not been before, but mostly I needed an outlet for emotion.”
The new Aquariums release from For the Philistine Records, ’…In Love and Death’, is a dark, brooding trip through life, love and loss. ”My beautiful madonna why wear your crown low?” These tender words spoken to a mourning lover opens the album and sets the tone for what is to follow.
