While I would definitely agree on this music having a surreal nature, what he is referring to is serialism http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serialism, key to the modern composition of music.

Why does no one ever know how to spell "surrealism?"

Griminfis: Serialism is beautiful :D i think the "centers" appear accidentally, though, but still, beautiful :) I guess this pasacaglia is from his tonal works? Sounds like Romanticism :P

Oneiromaster said: "I wouldn't say this is completely serial. It doesn't sound random enough :)". I answer: serialism doesn't mean random, it is another way of order the sounds not depending of a tonal gravity center. It's a complex and mathematical musical system, an alternative to the old tonality. Serialism is beautiful for me!

serialism isn´t dodecaphonie, which where invented by schönberg, webern was his student.

I read somewhere that... You are kidding aren´t you nullpunkt? Or are you just trying to make a "nullpunkt"? --- I read somewhere that humans came to earth with a spaceship from Planet "Yrrk". And Alban Berg was a Beatles-fan etc. Come on! Don´t kid yourself!

Webern was certainly NOT a serialist, so that's clearly a wrong tag above. Serialism is a post WWII extension of the dodecaphonic composition technique, and Webern died in 1945. I've read somewhere that Messiaen "invented" serialism in his "études des modes et des valeurs", than it was taken over by Boulez and the whole crew at Darmstadt in the 50ies.

I find this quite sparse and bleak. It comes across firmly, but sadly.
