Michael Bradley (aka Antic Clay) started the southern-gothic band Myssouri in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996.
When Myssouri disbanded in 2003, Michael Bradley adopted the name Antic Clay and traveled to a friend’s studio in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. From these sessions comes the audacious double-cd debut “Hilarious Death Blues”, a title inspired, like the pseudonym Antic Clay, by the dark westerns of reknowned American novelist Cormac McCarthy. Bradley/Clay sang, wrote and played most everything on the album, which has a feeling about it both archaic and modern, heavy on the reverb and sparse on the instrumentation like old Sun Studios recordings, very much inspired by late night lost highway AM radio, vintage country songs and the mythology of the Old West, although the lyrical content is far too dark and cynical to make it on the Grand Ole Opry.

I first heard Myssouri years ago in Atlanta and was hooked that very night. Antic Clay evolves even more into a moodier and dark collection. Antic Clay's music not only induces a mood but within seconds can make me feel as though I've left the main highway or trail and I'm headed off through the west on a clear night. The music is true western americana at it's best with a touch of gothic. As a McCarthy fan and a lover of Blood Meridian, I can say this music makes a perfect soundtrack to read by. Intelligent songwriting and creative composition comes together in Antic Clay to produce music that is both reminiscent and unique. I think I'll sit back and stare at the dark western sky, sip some more whiskey and listen again.

It's a good, healthy dose of dark, brooding, anti-corporate blues country. I'm so glad that music like this exists. Fuck radio country. This is the real fucking deal.
