6 Jun 2006, 01:40 by hijaxI've been listening to a compilation album, Tropicália - A Brazilian Revolution In Sound. I don't know much about tropicalia as a music style but I know I can hear its influence on other artists I like.
David Byrne's solo career has been directly influenced by world music, especially the music of South America. His favorite solo album of mine, Rei Momo, was an exploration of specific rhythms and styles, but the later ones (especially uh-oh and Look Into The Eyeball) seem very influenced by tropicalia.
Beck too. In fact, his album Mutations, contains a song called Tropicalia, but the influence is apparent almost everywhere.
Imagine my surprise, when reading the Wikipedia entry on tropicalia, that both Byrne and Beck are mentioned as being followers of the style. hmmm. Apparently the music was born out of 60's revolution; a combination of rock, bossa nova, African music and other folk music traditions. So it's not a great shock I am enjoying it so much. …
