Anna Kline and the Grits & Soul Band

Anna Kline is originally from Hernando, Mississippi and grew up cradled between the Mississippi Delta and Soulsville, USA. Her roots began with hymns in four part harmony, Celtic and folk music along with a major obsession with Memphis soul. Since the age of 16, her clear, rich voice stops the chatter of noisy regulars in coffeehouse crowds & bars. Her music is a combination of a powerhouse voice that shakes the rafters coupled with a true gift for lyrical storytelling (as only a Southern writer can do). Her voice as a songwriter shares crafted lyrics full of intimacy, wit and frankness.
Anna moved to Jackson, Mississippi in 2004, to work for legendary label Malaco Records in music licensing, and continued to steep herself in the state’s rich blues and R&B heritage. Anna’s wide-ranging creative work with film, freelance writing and work around the state of Mississippi directly influences her music, songwriting and perspective.
In 2011, The Grits & Soul Band was born. Anna found a kindred spirit in lead guitar player Scott Anderson (of Vernon Brothers and D’Lo Trio lineage), and they began regularly playing gigs together in the fall of 2010. In January of 2011 Scott brought Kentucky-born-and-bred John Looney into the mix with his bluegrass mandolin style and a voice straight out of Appalachia. Travis “Pink” Pinkston joined the fray the next month with his soulful, smokin’ upright bass. And the Grits & Soul Band was born.
The “Grits & Soul” name came from a James Brown instrumental album Anna found while diggin’ through some record bins. It fit the bill for everything they wanted to represent musically.
