Biography

Play, Experiment, Enjoy!!! “Anima Popolare” officially came into existence in 2003: the idea was to create a musical group that reproposed the traditional folk culture of the South of Italy.

Mariano Antonilli on the guitar, Giuseppe Karbo Di Pilla on reeds and percussison, and Giovanni “Joe” Ciccorelli on the violin. That was how it all started, but something was missing… In fact, in 2004, the singer and rhythm guitarist, Angelo “Veleno” Delli Carpini, joined the group. The new formation started to perform live, first of all locally and then further and further afield. In July 2005, in a context that was almost “foreign” to the group, the originality of their sound won them third prize at the Art Rock Festival of Venafro (IS)! From the very beginning the group’s aim has been to experiment and push back barriers without limiting itself to straightforward reproductions of traditional Italian folk music. While participating in various concerts organized in Isemia, in December 2005 the group produced its first single “L’acqua e la rosa” (The water and the rose), a tribute to Musicanova. In the summer of 2006 a new track “Lecca Lecca” (Lolipop), presented in an acoustic version at the Acoustic Unplugged Experience in San Donà di Piave (VE), took the group’s reputation beyond the confines of Molise. The track led to a home-produced video which was used in October by the television station “Channel 50” for the Festival del Tirreno in Pisa. The popularity of the track was such that it won first prize in the new proposals section.
