United Kingdom (1981 – 1984)

Mary Sandeman (born November 20, 1954), is a Scottish better known by the name Aneka. She had an international #1 with the 1981 single “Japanese Boy”. Aneka’s only studio album, Aneka, failed to chart in the US; with decreasing chart placements for her follow-up singles, the last of which was released in 1984, she was forever labeled a “one-hit wonder.” Aneka, whose name was chosen at random from a phone directory, is also remembered for her distinct usage of Japanese clothing.

Sandeman has since disowned her ’80s act and returned to her musical beginnings in her native Scotland as a singer, performing and recording interpretations of Scottish folk songs with the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra. Aneka’s career enjoyed a modest resuscitation as a result of “Japanese Boy” being featured on the soundtrack of the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

her album is such an interesting oddity. some scottish folk singer gets hired to sing a ridiculously catchy and un-PC synth pop song, has a hit with it and then records an album in which her producers try her out with just about every style popular in britain around 1981. so you get shades of kim wilde synths, ska by way of bananarama, bucks fizz style pure pop and a few spooky ballads that seem to be kate bush parodies. weird and wonderful.

I discovered Miss Aneka, the great Diva, thanks to my time playing GTA Vice City. Everytime I stole a car I turned to the channel that would sooner or later play Japanese Boy. It was the highlight of my killing sprees... I've been in love with the song ever since. [2] :D <3
