So Dave Hunt has said this song is about Hitler's suicide, and I just realized how much sense the title makes from that standpoint- from "The Final Solution" to "The Final Absolution"... The clean chorus also makes a lot of sense in this light- pretty obvious what "Such ranks of worship millions strong, yet the chalice was poisoned" means if you think of it as referring to Nazism, and "With mere servants standing strong, witnessing the death of God" is most likely a reference to Hitler's worshipful aides with him in the bunker when he killed himself, or possibly the idea that the atrocities of Nazism shattered any remaining foundation for belief in a benevolent God.

I remember seeing a video on youtube where Dave said this song was about Hitler and his cowardly suicide (The FInal Absolution). He may just have been joking, but it makes sense to some degree.

Also, 'death of God' would be quite obvious for nihilistic and apocalyptic style of AN, 'devil gone' would perfectly suit the idea of final absolution.
