Biography

Ana Matronic (born Ana Lynch on 14 August 1974, in San Francisco) is the female lead singer for Scissor Sisters. She joined the group founded by Jake Shears and Babydaddy after they played their first live gig at a night called Knockoff which she founded and hosted at The Slipper Room on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Prior to moving to New York, Ana lived in San Francisco, where she performed at the drag club Trannyshack and was the first female to reach the finals of the Miss Trannyshack pageant. It was her experience at Trannyshack that inspired her to start the club Knockoff, intended as a “knockoff” version of Trannyshack.

Her stage name is a homage to her love of The Bionic Woman and imagery of robots (as in Audio-Animatronics). Indeed, her arm is tattoed with a robotic interior. Other influences on her include Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. She has stated that in her eyes, the objective of the band is “about people displaying their fantasies on the outside, trying to break out of the everyday, and look like their dreams.”

In 2004, Ana revealed to British magazine Glamour that her parents’ marriage broke up when she was a toddler due to her father’s homosexuality, and that her father died of an AIDS-related illness when she was 13. She has allegedly said that her immersion in gay culture is probably an attempt to feel closer to him, as they never had a very deep relationship whilst he was alive.

Following this article several British newspapers said Ana was allegedly trying to contact her late father’s partner. She angrily refutes this on the band’s official messageboard, saying that he had been a very important parental figure in her life and she did not need such measures to contact him.
