Amplifier are best known for their trademark massive live wall-of-distortion which is conjoured out of multiple amps and many many effects pedals. Their music is often described as progressive rock, psychedelic rock, post classic rock, melodic rock, stoner rock and mega rock
A quick history of the band would be thus:
Proto-Amplifier formed in 1998, but did their first gig on 4th May 1999 at Manchester’s Band On The Wall. After some years and many many gigs, and equally as many floors that were slept upon and miles travelled in their trusty and rusty white transit van, they signed a record deal with Music For Nations, the stalwart indie rock label that housed such names as Metallica, Slayer, Tool, Frank Zappa, err… Bowling For Soup.
They recorded their eponymously titled album in 2003, which came out in the UK in 2004, with a very very very limited run in Europe that year also. The album came out to tremendous press and a Kerrang awards best new band nomination. Unfortunately, the same week as the records release the label MFN was dissolved in a business merger between Zomba, the label’s parent company and giant corporate behemouth Sony/BMG. The band spent about year trying to get out of the clutches of their new masters, before buying their freedom in an act of artistic manumission which is called an “override” deal. Trust me, if you’re in a band - you don’t want to hear this phrase.

I guess I can sum up my previous shout like this: if I wanna listen to some epic atmospheric post-rock I'll play some Sigur Rós or Explosions In The Sky. If I wanna hear some proper rock, I play Amplifier. But yeah, before I get flamed, the album isn't out yet so all bets are off.

I'll have to listen to the album to make a proper judgement of it, but so far none of the riffs on those MySpace tracks can top some of the best songs on Insider (Map of an Imaginary Place, Strange Seas Of Thought) and don't come even close to their debut. In my opinion, of course. I don't want to listen to the same thing over and over again (gawd, how I hate that argument!), but I don't wanna listen to a whole new band as well. Not saying Octopus is very different from the "trademarked" Amplifier sound, but it does sound different enough to make me go look somewhere else... And that's why I'm worried about it. Anyway, I still have 2 albums and 1 EP to feast my ears on in case The Octopus fails on me :)

@ tks. i am a fan of they're sound, but i don't want to listen to the same song over and over. and for me, there are a lot parts and riffs on the second album, that come again and again. so i love the octopus songs, cause they are something new to the amplifier sound. atmospheric and epic. but those also are characteristics of the other albums (especially first and ep). so you see.. it's something new, but still amplifier (on a new level).
