Biography

Twenty-four months after the release of their critically acclaimed third album The Octopus, Amplifier are back with a brand new album called Echo Street - their first with the new four-piece line-up - and a new working arrangement with Kscope.
The deal sees the band come full circle. Sales of independently released The Octopus left them amazed and delighted, and encouraged them to headhunt the promise of Kscope (home to Anathema, Porcupine Tree etc) to now provide the best of both worlds - artistic freedom and commercial clout to take Amplifier to a new level.

Such change is constant for Amplifier, who have always been a band that refuses to stand still. Now the band of Sel Balamir (guitars) and Matt Brobin (drums) re-emerge at the core of a very different animal - a four-piece line-up that has delivered a subtle shift in style allowing them to mix their epic space rock jams with accessible pieces boasting three-part vocal harmonies - sung by Sel, former Oceansize man Steve Durose (second guitar) and Alex “Magnum” Redhead (bass).

Sel: “I guess the people are going to be expecting something like a follow-up to The Octopus - but Echo Street isn’t like that at all. It’s important that people understand that not everything will be like what has gone before. I never want to repeat myself.”
Nothing in life is completely black and white but if The Octopus was black, then Echo Street is white.
“Before I sort the sheep out into the order of the most beautiful. I like to put all the white ones over here and all the black ones over there. That’s a summary of my job - it’s a bit like being a rock shepherd”

Matmos was an awesome choice for the first single, and The Wheel probably is one of the best, most iconic and representative songs Amplifier has ever made. Echo Street has some pretty good stuff in it. Definitely their most focused and mature release.

Новый альбом атмосферен, но скучен и уныл. Только первая и последняя песни хороши. [2]

I'm with you, tomplifier. I actually got into Amplifier through Oceansize's debut.

Amplifier had lalala's and nanana's on their other albums, too. Here they play with their new possibilities with two background singers. And why not? On some songs it works perfect, on other not that well, but this is okay. I like Echo Street very much. And there is no comparison needed. Whether to The Octopus not to Steven Wilson. This man has a large influence to modern prog music. Look on developments of Riverside or Anathema for example. This bands have more to do with Porcupine Tree-style of music, than Amplifier ever had.

LakeGlade, I can see your comparisons there but I believe that Amp's music is thoroughly more interesting than Porcupine Tree and SW's solo gear from the last decade. I find Pineapple Thief's last two albums to be flat and boring as well, mind you ... after being a fan of theirs upto including Tightly Unwound. Amplifier are still at the 'top of the pops' when it comes to the battle of mainstream prog.

This band is suffering from the classic case of Steven Wilsonitus. It is likley that they became infected by the over-exposure of Porcupine Tree over the years (a well know carrier of Steven Wilsonitus). Common symtoms include vauge concept albums, the publishing of super-delux hardback books and most importantly the uncontrolled use of La-La-La's as a substitute for proper lyrics.

To be honest I don't think I've even got over The Octopus yet. I refuse to make comparisons. The Octopus is just too monolithic.

Love the new album and the new EP as well. And suprisingly I am digging all the pa-pa-pas, na-na-nas and la-la-las:) Matmos, Extra Vehicular, Where The River Goes are extremely strong and awesome tracks. Well done Amplifier!!!
