About this album

The Karelian Isthmus is the debut album of Finnish metal band Amorphis.

Although The Karelian Isthmus took its name from a historic Finnish battleground, Karelian Isthmus, its lyrics focus on Amorphis’s well known epic themes from the history of Finnish warfare and religion, but drawing more into celtic mythology rather than the later traditions of Amorphis’s own native land. The epic side is sometimes broken up by the occult lyrical themes in tracks including “Pilgrimage”, “Misery Path” and “Black Embrace”. In recent years, songs from this album have been receiving more play during Amorphis’ live performances, despite being of a different style than their later works.

The album was re-released in 2003 with all the songs from the “Privilege of Evil” EP added as bonus tracks.

A seriously underrated release, the melodies featured here are absolutely astounding. It's kind of a shame that melodic death metal like this isn't widespread.

This and Privilege are way better than anything else they'd do afterward

I don't really care about any other release from them but this one.

This is the only Amorphis' LP on which they perform a straight death metal style, making this release unique. I always wonder why Esa quit singing in order to innovate Amorphis musical direction. Worth listening!!

Tales is a much more interesting and dynamic album, but this is excellent for a debut, and it's one of the best Finnish death metal albums.

It's really good, although it's not really what fell in love with Amorphis for. I like the album's heaviness and old school style, but I think the band's music is much more spellbinding when Amorphis adds keyboards, folk instruments, and their melodic style, but hey, they had to start somewhere. \m/

It does combines some folk influences, but this is indeed old school death metal. Sensational stuff.

@Doomdominus: You're wrong on both accounts. It's definitely not a boring album and Privilege of Evil is the most brutal Amorphis album.

@Ahmad: Death Metal is a musical style, not a lyrical theme.
