About this album

The Beginning of Times is the tenth studio album by Finnish metal band Amorphis, released on May 25, 2011 in Finland, May 27 in Europe and June 7 in the United States. Like previous Amorphis albums, The Beginning of Times is a concept album. The central character of the songs is Väinämöinen, described by the band as “the iconic hero of Finnish mythology”.

On April 11, 2011, Amorphis premiered the first single “You I Need” on their Facebook page. It was released digitally in Finland on April 20, 2011, and in other countries on April 22, 2011. Early the next month, the band released another new song, “My Enemy”, again on Facebook.

The Beginning of Times had a strong sales debut week, charting at No. 1 on the Finnish Albums Chart and No. 16 on the German Media Control Charts.

In a professional review for PopMatters, Adrien Begrand praised the album, going so far as to say that Amorphis have never sounded better with their current line-up. Amateur reviews have also been positive, with Craig Hartranft of DangerDog proclaiming “The Beginning of Times finds Amorphis in grand form, doing what they do best”.

Tomi Joutsen – vocals
Tomi Koivusaari – rhythm guitar

Not as bad as i originally thought, but i find it to be a mediocre album at best, with good parts in it. Mermaid and Song Of The Sage are pretty decent songs with some catch in them.

First 5 tracks are absolutely killer songs!! Especially the second track, "Mermaid", but after that this album feels like songs that weren't good enough to form part of Skyforger, Tomi Joutsen's era masterpiece without discussion.

I'd never really got into Amorphis. I'd heard quite a few tracks but nothing really grabbed me. After seeing them at Rockhard Fest in 2011 and enjoying their set I decided to give em another go and listened to this album. I'm just gonna come out and say it now... its one of the best albums I have ever heard! I've not felt this about any album for a long time... probably Wintersun's debut tbh. Absolutely phenomenal from beginning to end!

Well, their greatest with Tomi. 3 Ways better than Skyforger. Great magical atmosphere.

I personally think this is the weakest album of the current Tomi Joutsen era, but it's still good. It does not top Skyforger (my first Amorphis release), Silent Waters, or Eclipse, but there are definitely some great songs on here, such as Three Words, Crack in A Stone, Battle for Light, Song of the Sage, and the title track. Everyone keeps making a big deal out of Mermaid though, it's not bad, however I personally thought that was one of the album's weaker tracks. Still it's a good effort.

Pretty good, better than Skyforger in my opinion. Tales will always still get the most spins for me though.

Skyforger was like my favourite album for a while. Is this one a good follow up?

Actually, I gotta agree with KillerCage. When I first heard Skyforger, I was rather disappointed. I'd put this one on par with Eclipse simply because Mermaid and Song of the Sage are two of their best songs. None of them are as good as Silent Waters though.

5 times better than Skyforger - made my day, hahah, sorry but I cannot agree, the album is great, it is a masterpiece, but it is not better than any of the three before it.

5 times better than Skyforger. a little heavier in parts than Eclipse but for new Amorphis albums this is nearly as good as Eclipse \m/ Next album suprise us all with an all out doom/death album !
