American Head Charge, the Minneapolis-based industrial/alternative metal band, which had its genesis nine years ago when Martin Cock (then known as Cameron Heacock) and Chad Hanks (now known as Mr. H.C. Banks III) first crossed paths in a Minnesota rehab facility, has up to now been known primarily for the radically dysfunctional behavior of the band members.

“We were definitely out of control on our first tour, Ozzfest 2001,” Mr. Banks admits. “It wasn’t enough to just play our music; we also had to fire shotguns on stage and throw pigheads at the crowd. Chalk it up to a desperate bid for attention.” The Head Charge rap sheet - which also includes getting into bloody brawls with their fans, smashing equipment they couldn’t afford to replace, reacquainting themselves with hard drugs and occasionally being locked up by the enraged fuzz - has served to obscure the fact that these free spirits play the shit out of their instruments and make brutally powerful music of uncommon distinction.

But this distorted (though hardly inaccurate) perception of the band will likely change with the release of The Feeding, a seething mass of avant metal, nightmare grindcore and moshpit rock that alternates between pummeling ferocity and passages of all-out grandeur. It’s a stunning display of primally extreme music that’s guaranteed to scare the hell out of your parents.

Funny thing is i went to a Slipknot gig in 2002, and these guys were there. Of course i went out the next day to pick up a copy of The War of Art.. still a favourite and the album stays their strongest, imo. Shame they disbanded..

...and when they did offer more midtempo darkness and murk, like Take What I've Taken and Walk Away it cut to the bone and managed to send chills up the spine in a way so many of the dad hating nu-metal bands of the era could only dream of. Just read down the shoutbox they're no longer a band, that's a shame. They had their fair share of trouble throughout their existence which obviously reduced their output, and sometimes it's surprising they got as far as they did, but they released a couple of truly singular records and remain a beacon of light in a genre that, despite being a key part of my musical development as I came of age, so to speak, was ultimately a lot crap. Consider this an obituary I suppose, good luck to them in the future and all, be nice to see some more decent records from any of them.

My peak of interest was in my early teens when their debut first came out and this kind of music was "well my thing", but as I commented on the Ozzfest 2002 page (the first time and place of three I had the pleasure of seeing them) they were one of the only bands from that era that stuck with me, were loved enough by me, and had the longevity and capacity to be taken seriously in later musical maturity, enough for me to go see them again as late as 2006. Every time was amazing, all for different reasons, and I'd happily go see them again if they played near me, even though my chart is hardly saturated with metal bands. They had, have I suppose, such a cool aesthetic, the whole military thing, general filth and perversion of mentality (as displayed in, for example, Never Get Caught), and the energy and emotion even in clinical lyrical description (like in Seamless). The sense of melody combined with sense of groove is unmatched in their subgenre...
