Composed, written and performed by Alexander Rybak, this song was the Norwegian entry in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest that was held in Moscow, Russia.

According to the Fairytale Songfacts, the song was inspired by Rybak’s memories of a former girlfriend, Ingrid Berg Mehus.

The song was elected through the Norwegian TV show Melodi Grand Prix on February 21, 2009, winning the greatest landslide victory in the history of the competition.

It competed in the second Eurovision Song Contest semi final on May 14 2009, and after making it to the finals, won the whole contest on May 16 2009 with 387 points breaking the old record (set by Finland’s Lordi in 2006) of 292.

The song is also the first single of Rybak’s debut album “Fairytales” which will be released in June.
