From STABAT MATER

I have always been interested in automation, in technology, in science, as much as in science fiction, in the Twilight zone, in creatures that were half machines and half human. Growing up in Prague, I had the good fortune to learn already as a child about two most famous such phenomena that originated there: Golem and Robot.
Golem has been a legendary figure for centuries, reportedly created in the late 16th Century by the Chief Rabbi of Prague, Judah Loew ben Bezalel, the “Maharal”, who created this huge clay figure operated by a special insert, to defend the Jewish ghetto.

Robot, on the other hand, is purely a literary invention of Karel Čapek, a major 20th century Czech writer and dramatist; Robot was a technological wonder constructed by man, again to serve mankind, except in Čapek’s play “RUR” the Robots gradually outgrow their restricted, controlled existence and end up controlling mankind.
My interest in both, Golem and Robot, eventually projected itself in two compositions: “A Robot is Talking” and “Golem”. The former is available on last.fm as a video from 1979, sung through a vocoder with lyrics by the current Czech Ambassador to the UK, Michael Žantovský - just like in “RUR”, a Robot appears as a useful friend who ends up dominating everybody: this was actually a thinly veiled parallel to the Soviet Union and its invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, under the pretence of an act of friendship.
My other track, “Golem” is not political at all, it is a theme that I wrote for a planned film about the mystical creature who in the course of saving the ghetto falls in love that is ultimately doomed.
