Gaba Kulka has always been great for a surprise (remember her changing her name from Gabriela Kulka?), now she’s out to get me hooked on heavy metal (and, thus, turn me into my brother, Thermoskanne) with this record full of Iron Maiden covers.

After having been completely overwhelmed with the quantity of material on his last two records, I was glad to see Waits back with a regular studio record. It does contain the usual mixture of melancholy and noise with songs erring on either side.

8 Jul 2011, 07:12 by irisvanhoornAs a kind of summary of my listening and reviewing activities of the past weeks, I would like to make a ranking list of the studio albums of Alanis Morissette. Some of the songs and albums are long time favourites, while others are just recently discovered. This list just shows how I think about them today, and may change over time.
1. Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998)
It was hard to make a choice between this album and the number 2, because I love them both so much. At the moment, this album wins. It is a dark and experimental album with very great epic lyrics.
Best tracks: Thank U, That I Would Be Good, The Couch, I Was Hoping, So Pure, Joining You
2. Jagged Little Pill (1995)
Her very strong international debut album, of which millions of copies were sold over the past 15 years. A pure and original album about very personal feelings and thoughts. …

17 Jun 2011, 21:13 by irisvanhoornAlanis Morissette - Flavors of Entanglement
I bought Alanis her last album Flavors of Entanglement in March of this year (2011). I did not really know what to expect, but I must say it was a nice surprise. This album is quite different from her previous studio album So-Called Chaos. It is much more experimental, using a lot of electronic sounds and kind of Arabic melodies. After writing and producing two albums by herself (Under Rug Swept and So-Called Chaos), the songs on this album are co-written and produced by Guy Sigsworth, which I think was a good choice. For some reason it seems to work for her to write the songs together with another songwriter/musician. Her cooperation with Glen Ballard also resulted in two very strong albums. The overall feeling on this album is sadness, although also other feelings as anger and happiness are expressed. It is mainly a melancholic album on which she is grieving over the end of her relationship. …

2 Jan 2011, 09:55 by menslarI enjoy listing my top artists each year, and 2010 will be no exception. Below are listed my top 50 artists for 2010, the top track(s) and top album(s) for each listed artist, and the position those tracks and albums attained in my 2010 charts. Maybe you'll spot some of your favorites on my charts. If you see any artists, albums, or tracks here that you aren't familiar with, maybe you'll consider giving them a listen. My charts are as much a mixed bag this year as years passed, but I listened to some artists in 2010 to whom even I am a bit surprised to find myself listening. I was in a strange mood this past year, I guess.
There were a lot of ties for track and album positions in 2010, so you'll see some duplicate ranks for tracks and albums in this list. There was even a tie this year for the #50 position for artist rankings, which makes this a top 51 list instead of a top 50 list...
#50 (tie): Brandy 108 plays
Top Track: Afrodisiac track #264
